If a fruit could win prom queen, it would probably be a strawberry. These sweet treats are a popular flavor of everything from pies to candy to ice cream and more. Although considered a seasonal delicacy in many parts of the world, strawberries tend to be available almost year-round in the United States. (So don’t forget to be extra grateful for them the next time you see it in the grocery stores!)

Happy eating!

  • From a sustainability perspective, strawberries have found themselves in hot water (and not the good kind that leads to jam). Studies report that the strawberry industry has been built on many unsustainable practices that ultimately affect the consumer, loading up the produce with harmful pesticides and more.

The good news is that producers are starting to notice and address the growing concerns around the strawberry industry ("California Strawberries: Growing for a Sustainable Future").

As a consumer, your dollar can sometimes be your strongest vote -- but you can't represent your best interests if you don't know what's going on. Sometimes, the most ambitious thing you can do about an issue you care about is simply to be informed.
